About Earworx
Earworx began in Tasmania in 2016, when founder Lisa Hellwege decided to introduce effective and safe micro-suction technology to her home state. Julie Alexander
Julie Alexander has almost two decades of experience in healthcare, with a diverse background across a range of medical specialities. After commencing her career as a registered nurse in Queensland Health at Princess Alexandra Hospital, Julie went on to work as a general practice nurse. Julie has previously performed ear irrigation and has also developed extensive skills in performing health assessments for older patients, in ECGs and spirometry, and wound care management. She has assisted doctors with minor procedures and is an expert in instrument sterilisation, cold chain management, and maintaining critical and client sensitive documentation.
Julie is passionate about providing excellent service to clients and is looking forward to continuing her work within the Chermside community in Brisbane. She is excited to work with Earworx patients and create a positive experience for everyone that visits the clinic. Julie strongly believes in the importance of creating a safe and kind environment and will work to build trusting and respectful relationships with Earworx clients.
Lyle Libuit
When you visit our Chermside Clinic, you will be taken care of by our experienced and caring Registered Nurse, Lyle. Lyle has practiced overseas and in Australia, and brings her skills in offering comprehensive patient care to her role at Earworx.
Lyle completed a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Silliman University in the Philippines in 2008, and became qualified to practice in Australia at the College of Nursing in Sydney in 2011. She began her career at Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital in 2009, working as a Registered Nurse to treat and administer medication to paediatric patients, as well as educating and developing relationships with patients’ parents. She has worked at Regis Sandgate, delivering nursing care to residents in the aged care setting, teaching patients how to improve lifestyle choices to reduce symptom recurrence, and adjusting care plans. She has also worked for Metro North Community and Oral Health as a Registered Nurse, working across areas including Rehabilitation, Aged Care, Transition Care, and delivering nursing care in the sub-acute setting. Most recently, Lyle worked at Prince Charles Hospital to provide comprehensive nursing care to patients hospital wide.
Lyle has an interest in aural care and has completed the Earworx aural care course and training program. Lyle will educate you on how to maintain good ear health and provide care and compassion when you visit her at Earworx.Â
Sandy Lu
Sandy is a highly motivated Registered Nurse who uses her exceptional interpersonal and communication skills to provide the best of care to all of her Earworx patients. She has experience working across many areas of healthcare including anatomical pathology, histology, and dialysis. Sandy is passionate about ensuring that patients understand the ear wax removal method and the optimal ways to care for their ears in the long term.
Sandy has two degrees, including a Bachelor of Nursing from RMIT and a Bachelor of Science: Laboratory Medicine from RMIT. She has worked at Eastern Health in Box Hill, Victoria within the dialysis unit and has fostered a positive relationship between the patients and their caregivers.
Sandy speaks three languages: English, Mandarin and Taiwanese Hokkien. She loves working with all segments of the community and takes pride in being able to communicate with people in their native language. Sandy’s passion is to help patients better understand the importance of ear health and to have a better quality of life through treating and preventing impacted ear wax.
Rebecca Ovini Yap
With 5+ years of nursing experience, Rebecca (Becky), brings a wealth of knowledge to Earworx Chermside, expressing a passionate commitment to patient care.
Rebecca’s journey in healthcare began at the University of Auckland, where she earned her Post Graduate Certificate, building upon her Bachelor of Nursing from Manukau Institute of Technology. Her diverse background includes experience in acute surgical orthopedics at Middlemore Hospital, where she honed her skills in patient care and multidisciplinary collaboration.
Rebecca’s time at the Takanini Vaccination Centre showcased her ability to provide compassionate care while managing high-volume health services. Her recent role in home healthcare has further refined her skills in personalised patient care and treatment plans.
Becky has undertaken the Earworx Aural Care and Microsuction courses and brings her exceptional observational and communication skills to ensure each patient receives thorough, gentle care. Her empathetic nature allows her to establish a warm rapport with patients of all ages, putting them at ease during ear wax removal procedures.
Outside of patient care, Rebecca enjoys staying active through tennis and yoga, as well as spending quality time with family and friends. Her well-rounded approach to life enhances her ability to connect with and care for the diverse patients we serve at Earworx.
How the Earworx Procedure Works
While it might not feel that way, earwax is actually an important and naturally occurring substance in our bodies, protecting and lubricating our ear canals for overall ear health. However, when earwax builds up or becomes impacted within the ear, it can result in uncomfortable symptoms and even serious health problems.
Earworx works to remove the excess earwax by first thoroughly examining the ear to determine if the medical removal is clinically indicated. If the procedure is suitable for you, one of our Earworx registered nurses will use the micro-suction technique combined with curettage to gently remove the impacted wax. Our nurses wear ‘loupes’, which allow them to better view your ear canals throughout the procedure. These are binocular glasses with a bright light attached, and ensure the safety of your ear canal and eardrum. The procedure is quick and pain-free.
Why You Might Need Ear Wax Removal
If you have excess or impacted earwax in your ears it can be quite uncomfortable and result in symptoms such as itching, pain, a sensation of fullness, and even hearing loss or tinnitus. Normally, the ear cleans itself of excess wax, meaning a manual removal is not required. But if you are suffering from these symptoms, we recommend you book in for an assessment to get your ears unblocked quickly and easily.
You may be more likely to experience a build-up of earwax if you regularly swim or dive, work in dirty or dusty environments, or if you wear hearing aids, earplugs or earphones regularly. You can also be genetically predisposed to producing excessive earwax.
Pricing
Our qualified registered nurses use dry and effective micro suction to gently remove ear wax under direct observation.
The standard appointment fee for ear wax removal with Earworx is $150.
We offer a concession appointment fee for Pensioners, Veterans, Government Health Care Card Holders, Children, and Full-Time Students for $115.
If no ear wax is found during your appointment, we offer a reduced rate of $75 for the consultation (or $60 for concession).
If further follow up appointments are required after additional softening (within 4 weeks of initial appointment), all follow up appointments will be charged at a rate of $60 for standard fee paying patients (or $30 for concession).
A regular return rate applies for patients who attend within 3 months or more frequently. This is $95 for regular return standard fee paying patients and $85 for regular concession/pension card holders.
Please note we are a provider for St Lukes Health and Health Care Insurance (HCI).
We also see children aged 4 years or older. A discussion with Earworx staff is recommended prior to booking. For safety reasons children need to be able to follow direction and keep reasonably still.
