What’s Involved in the Earworx Procedure?
Earwax is a naturally occurring and healthy bodily substance. It serves as a protective barrier, preventing infection and foreign bodies from entering our ears and damaging our ear drum. Everyone has earwax, but sometimes we can develop excess wax, or the wax inside our ear canals can become hard and impacted. This can be uncomfortable and painful, causing a range of symptoms.
When you visit our Brunswick Clinic, we will carefully examine the inside of your ears using loupes, which allow a magnified examination of both your ear canals. This examination will allow us to determine whether or not excess wax is present, and whether wax removal is clinically indicated. Our nurses utilise the micro-suction technique used at all Earworx clinics to remove your excess earwax safely and gently.
Micro-suction is a gentle and dry method of earwax extraction. The micro-suction catheter functions like a tiny vacuum; suctioning excess wax out of your ear canal. It is a quick and effective way of removing earwax. Micro-suction requires no water, meaning it is very comfortable and pressure free.
Symptoms of Excess Earwax
Impacted earwax can cause significant pain and discomfort if left untreated. Some of the symptoms include a built up or blocked feeling, itching, ringing in the ear, loss of hearing and dizziness or vertigo.
Some people are naturally predisposed to producing more earwax. However, there are also activities that should be avoided or limited to prevent impacted wax if you are prone to wax build up. These include using cotton buds (or any other implements) to attempt to clean the ears. Regular swimming or diving, using earplugs, or wearing headphones for prolonged periods can also contribute to wax build up. Hearing aid wearers can also experience built up wax.
If you are suffering from excess earwax and experiencing any of these uncomfortable symptoms, it’s important not to attempt to remove the earwax yourself. Removing earwax using cotton buds or your finger can push the wax further into the ear, worsening symptoms or even causing permanent damage. Book an appointment with us today so we can safely and effectively remove your built up earwax.
