What’s Involved in the Earworx Procedure?

Everybody has earwax – it’s a normal and natural substance that our bodies create to protect our ears. Without earwax, we could be susceptible to dust, dirt and foreign bodies entering our ear canal. This can be extremely dangerous, causing damage to the ear drum and even impacting the brain.

However, sometimes we can produce too much earwax or the wax becomes hard and impacted inside the ear. When this happens, it can become sore and uncomfortable, and even lead to other health issues.

At Earworx, we use micro-suction to remove excess earwax from our patients’ ears. The micro-suction technique is quick, pain-free and recommended by experts in ear health. It is a dry method, meaning that it doesn’t use water or other substances and is safe for people with ear infections and other conditions. This is why it is the preferred method of Ear, Nose and Throat specialists. Our Earworx Registered Nurses are trained in using this specialised technique, so you can be confident when you visit an Earworx clinic.

Micro-suction is a gentle and safe method which removes wax a bit like a tiny vacuum. The procedure takes only 30 minutes. You don’t need any referral from a doctor, and if there is no excess wax to remove, you will receive a 50% discount on the service.

When you visit our Glendale clinic, our nurse Cathie McMenamin will begin by explaining the micro-suction technique to you. Following this, she will thoroughly examine the insides of your ears using special glasses called loupes, which allow her to visualise the entire ear canal. If she determines that an earwax extraction is required, she will begin the removal procedure.

Symptoms of Excess Earwax

If you have excess or impact earwax, you may experience a range of uncomfortable and sometimes painful symptoms.

Commonly, people with excess earwax feel like their ears are blocked or experience a feeling of fullness in the ear. They can have some itchiness, dizziness, difficulty hearing and ringing in the ears. Sometimes, the ear will feel painful.

Excess earwax can be caused by environmental factors, and there are certain activities that you should avoid to prevent excess and impacted wax. Swimming and diving, wearing headphones a lot, using a hearing aid, or spending time in dirty environments can exacerbate earwax problems. Additionally, some people naturally produce more earwax and are susceptible to impacted wax. This can be due to your genetics or the shape of your ear canals.

Never try to clean your ears yourself using your fingers or a cotton bud. This will make the problem worse by forcing wax deeper into the ear. Inserting objects into the ear can be extremely dangerous and even cause permanent damage. Always visit a health professional if you are suffering from any of the symptoms listed above.

If you are experiencing excess or impacted earwax, book an appointment with us today so we can safely and effectively remove your built up wax.
