What Happens at my Earworx Appointment?

You’ll be welcomed by our warm and friendly front desk staff who will ask you to complete some forms. Our registered nurses will then invite you in to the clinic room and begin by working through your form with you, answering any questions and then carefully examining both ears.

As earwax plays an integral role in the healthy function of our ears, Earworx ensures that removal is only recommended where clinically indicated e.g., the wax is causing uncomfortable symptoms or is preventing needed assessment of the ear. If we don’t detect an excess of ear wax, we’ll even reduce your appointment fee – so you have nothing to lose! – and education will be provided.

The process itself is relatively quick, is gentle and dry, and is typically completed within just thirty minutes. Our registered nurses will use a micro-suction device and fine instruments to gently suction ear wax from the ear canal – all while directly observing your ear canals through use of a pair of binocular glasses, known as loupes. Following the procedure your nurse will provide expert guidance and tips on how to care for your ears moving forward.

Symptoms of Earwax Build Up

Earwax – everyone’s got it, so when does it become problematic?

In day-to-day functioning, earwax helps to protect and lubricate our ear canals and also to prevent infection. Its sticky texture helps to trap unwanted debris from entering the ear canal, and its bitter taste additionally deters insects. Earwax can build up to excessive levels however where the ‘self cleaning mechanism’ of the ear is not working effectively to clear excess wax from the ear. This can occur as a result of certain lifestyle factors, or can just be due to your genetic makeup. of your ear, is that earwax can build up to form a blockage.

Signs of an ear blocked with wax will usually start with a reduction in hearing and a feeling of fullness. The ears may also feel itchy and blocked, and there may be a ringing. Our ears are extremely sensitive so it’s important not to insert anything into the ear in attempt to rectify these issues e.g., cotton buds. Doing so can worsen symptoms by pushing wax back into the ear or cause damage to the delicate ear canals and drum. Professional ear wax removal is recommended.
