What’s Involved in the Earworx Procedure?
We all have earwax – it is a normal and protective bodily substance that is there to protect and lubricate your outer ear canal. Our bodies’ natural processes move earwax out gradually through a migrating skin layer, and through its texture and stickiness, the remaining wax prevents foreign bodies such as insects from entering our ear canal, and also helps to prevent infection.
However, sometimes earwax can build up inside the ear, becoming hard and impacted. When this happens, it can be very uncomfortable, resulting in itching, a blocked up feeling, and even pain.
The Earworx procedure is performed every day around Australia by registered nurses specially trained in the micro-suction technique. When you visit our Wembley clinic, our nurse Desiree Cowton will carefully examine your ears using special glasses, called loupes, that allow her to view inside your ear canal.
If Desiree determines that an earwax removal is clinically indicated, she will utilise micro-suction to gently and safely remove the excess wax, leaving your ears clear and healthy. Micro-suction operates like a tiny vacuum. It is a dry technique that utilises suction to gently remove earwax. The procedure takes just 30 minutes and education is provided at the conclusion of the appointment.
This technique of removing impacted earwax is the preferred method used by specialist Ear Nose and Throat doctors due to its safe application, even for people with eardrum perforations.
Symptoms of Excess Earwax
Have you ever experienced that blocked up, uncomfortable sensation of having excess earwax? Impacted wax can cause significant discomfit to the sufferer, resulting in difficulty hearing, ringing in the ears, and even dizziness.
Some people are predisposed to producing excess earwax through genetics, or they may have trouble with impacted earwax due to the narrow shape of their ear canal or excess hair. For other people, earwax build up can be caused by using headphones or wearing hearing aids, using earplugs, swimming or diving regularly, or spending a lot of time in dirty and dusty environments.
Attempting to clean your ears yourself can also cause impacted wax. Using cotton buds can push wax further into the ear canal, making it more difficult to remove. If you do have symptoms of excess wax, don’t try to solve the problem yourself. Book an appointment with us today so we can safely and effectively remove your built up earwax.
